Press Release: VA Announces $112M Grant Opportunity to Strengthen Community-Based Suicide Prevention Efforts

Web Exclusives

On March 18, 2026, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced a $112 million grant funding opportunity for organizations providing suicide prevention services to Veterans nationwide.

Grant funding is available to nonprofit organizations, state and local governments, federally recognized tribes, and other community-based organizations with a demonstrated capacity to serve Veterans. These funds are distributed through the Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox Suicide Prevention Grant Program. Applications are due by June 12, 2026.

“These grants invest directly in communities that know Veterans best and are often the first to recognize when someone is struggling,” said VA Secretary Doug Collins. “They have been successful in connecting Veterans, service members, and their families — especially those not yet engaged with VA — to services that help reduce suicide risk and promote well-being.”

Background:

  • Impact of Fox Grants in 2025:
    • Supported over 17,000 Veterans, service members, and family members — a 31% increase from 2024.
    • Nearly 9,000 Veterans at elevated suicide risk reported a 91.8% decrease in risk factors after receiving support.
    • Over 2,500 Veterans enrolled in VA healthcare for the first time — a 43.7% increase from 2024.

Since its 2022 launch, the Fox grant program has awarded $210 million to 111 organizations across 46 states, U.S. territories, and tribal lands.

A Continued Commitment:

Sixty percent of Veterans who die by suicide were not in VHA care within two years of their death. To address this, VA has enrolled over 76,000 Veterans into VA healthcare in 2026 alone.
